Did you select the TV as your sound output device in System Preferences > Sound > Output?

That may indicate that your Mac is not equipped to send sound out through the video port you are using.

The original poster on this thread had a MacBook Pro with Retina Display and using the builtin HDMI port. What model and year MacBook Pro do you have, and what port are you using?

OK, your MBP is just new enough to support multichannel audio out through the Mini DisplayPort.

In http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US "About Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters" Apple says:

"On some noncompliant Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters, the audio signal may not be passed to the HDMI device. Contact the manufacturer of your adapter or see www.vesa.org for more information."

That article also lists three adapters known to conform to the VESA DisplayPort Dual-Mode Standard (one each by Moshi, Griffin, and iWires) with links to purchase them through the online Apple Store.
