USB 3.0 external hard drives causing Kernel Panics when waking up 2012 MacBook Air

I've gone through three LaCie USB 3.0 external hard drives, I'm starting to wonder if it's something with the MBA.

1. First LaCie d2 Quadra v3 drive I purchased would not mount when plugged into USB 3.0, had to get a USB hub just for it to work with USB 2.0.

2. Replaced that with a newer LaCie d2 Quadra v3 drive that worked fine with USB 3.0, however when waking up the Mac it would cause a kernel panic and restart the computer every time.

3. Now I have a new LaCie 2big Quadra USB 3.0 RAID drive which also causes a kernel panic and restarts the computer whenever the Mac is woken up.

This MacBook Air is only a few months old, is running 10.8.2 and has all software updates installed. I've contacted Apple and talked with a Senior Advisor about this and we exhausted every bit of troubleshooting that could be done over the phone. He assured that it has to be a firmware issue of some sort relating to the external and not at all a hardware issue with the MBA. Would like to note that updating the firmware available for two of the drives did not fix the problem.

Any additional insight or advice would be appreciated. Here is the most recent kernel panic for reference:

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:

  • Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
  • When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
  • If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I went ahead booted up with Safe Mode, did not have the issue at all. Thanks for the suggestion, Linc.

In Safe Mode, LaCie Desktop Manager was not installed or available, so when I booted it up normally I played around with the options. It seems that the "shortcut button" which is configurable for this drive (a blue button) through this application is what's causing the kernel panics. I've been testing it for the past 3 hours, and so far when it is disabled in the app there is no issue at all.
