Q: how do it update my ios 4.3.5 to ios 5.0

When attempting to update on I-tunes for my IPad, I keep getting an error message: "The iPad software update server could not be contacted."  Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later.

How do I check my network settings?  Is the message referring to settings on my iPad or my PC?  I synced the two devices before attempting the update.
