I have 10.6.8, can I skip Lion and go straight to Mountain Lion?

I'm confused because what I read says i can upgrade for $19.99 but isn't Mountain Lion brand new? It's usually way more expensive for a new OS. I did research this on my own but I'm a little confused by what I read.

I bought my imac around '08.

I am so behind so sorry for the stupid questions but I also want to know if apple still sells the os disks or is everything digital download now? I really like having the disk. I just haven't had any problems with my iMac so I haven't been to this board in a long time so I'm kind of behind on everything.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8), Firefox 3

No. When I got Snow Leopard I bought the actual OS disk for it. Can you still do that? I mean like buy a brand new OS disk.

***Ok I just read where all new macs come with internet recovery and if your mac doesn't have that you can create a bootable on a usb stick. So I'm guessing the answer to my question is no, they no longer off the OS on disks.

Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion were all released at $19.99

Yes you can skip Lion and go to Mountain Lion providing your Mac meets the spec's.

see > Apple - OS X Mountain Lion - Read the technical specifications.

Althought 2 GB of RAM is the Minimun Requirement, you will be much happier with 4GB or whatever the maximum RAM your iMac can take.

see > iMac: How to remove or install memory

For recomended RAM suppliers, go to either Crucial or OWC (eshop.macsales)

Thanks, Den. But I think I may have just answered my own question about the disks.Looks like buying a disk is no longer an option.

I was so confused about the $19.99 price mark. When I bought my last brand new OS I paid $100 for it so I had a hard time believing I could get a totally new OS for $19.99. I think all I have is 2gb of memory on my imac and it doesn't look like I can get into it to change that. I'll look at your link though.

Thanks so much for the help!

No Apple store anywhere near here so can you recommend a website where I can buy the ram?

Don't guess, go to the Apple Menu (top left of screen) click on About This Mac and read what is fitted, how much and what speed (Mhz)

You should be able to fit up to 6GB of Ram, buy 1 x 2G and 1 x 4G chip. It will cost $50.00 or less.

Buy the Ram from OWC

I have 10.6.8, can I skip Lion and go straight to Mountain Lion?
