My MacBook Air suddenly shows a solid grey box and anywhere I move the mouse, a trail of small individual grey boxes follow. I have to press Power to end whatever I was working on. What is wrong?

Your graphic card is broken. Can you use your computer as usual after turning your computer off? Make a backup and take the computer to an Apple Store
Yes, once I turn it off and back on I can use it for a short while and then it will do it again.
I am under warranty, I purchased the extended warranty so I am good until 2014.
