Q: How do you add ringtones to iTunes 11?

I'm trying to add ringtones to the new iTunes 11 so that I can sync to my iPhone, but I can't seem to find the ringtones section to drag and drop ringtones into it. How can I add ringtones to iTunes 11 or does it even give the user that option?

    I had the same problem.

You have to reconnect your phone after you add the tones to the library.

After you reconnect, you will start seeing the tones tab under your phone.

I hate iTunes 11 so far, I shouldn't have update.

It doesn't transfer purchase or tell me how to do it, but just complain about how I have not transfer purchase to itunes library before update IOS. Stupid....

And then the ringtone thing as well...

I just hope the itune interface will eventually get better again...

I have tones in  my Tones library. Then in itunes i go to: devices/my phone/ tones. this is where i have a problem. Sync tones in unchecked. If i check it i get  a message " are you sure you want to remove all existing music"

How can i sync without losing everything, or how can i sync manually

    Cheers

This thread solved the gap in my knowledge. I have been googling this for the past hour or so. There is one thing that keeps happening when I create my AAC files though that I can't figure out. I set the playback option for, say, 35 seconds, the file is created, then when I listen to it, it ends early, about 3-5 seconds early. Is the file corrupted? I've tried syncing it to my phone anyway and it does cut off where it does when I try to play it in itunes. Can I do anything to make sure I get all of the music I want?

This didn't work for me. My tones show up in the "music" library, instead of the ringtone one, even after re-naming them. What am I doing wrong?

These solutions work, BUT there is a critical step left out regarding importing your own self made ring tone/sound clip files that didn't orginate from itunes.

If you only change the extension of a file (for example from .mp3 to m4r) itunes will still not recognize the file as a "tone", even if you drop it in the media folder along with the other "tones" even after you shutdown, restart, add file, add folder, etc.

    1.  You have to first add the file to itunes to convert and change the extension (simple enough, and I mean add it to your library so it is in itunes either by importing, drop it in your library, add file/folder/etc).

    2.  Next create an *aac version of the file (this will in essence convert whatever format you have to an aac "itunes friendly" format).

    3.  Once you have the aac version of the file you then can change the extension allowing itunes to differentiate the file and pull it into "tones" (I drag & drop the aac version file onto the desktop and append the extension to .m4r which designates a "tone", but you can probably right click on the aac version and "show in windows" to change the extension right there).

    4.  Once your file is changed (to .m4r) add it to your library and it should show up in your "tones" library of which you can sync and manipulate as needed.

    5.  Clean up; I like to go back and delete both the original and the converted tracks to keep it clean.

*to convert to an aac file you have to make sure your import settings in preferences are set this way and not to mp3 for example.

This works, I've done been able to reproduce it numerous times.  This kept me up for several nights, and is my first post hoping I may spare some people the same aggravation!

once in itunes you have to click on the menu button in the top left corner then click preferences

once in the prefrences menu click on genral then check the box next to tones and boom!

you now have the tones library. once your files are m4r just drag and drop them in

I was able to get my own tones displaying in iTunes 11's 'Tones' library folder as described in these instructions, however I found the key is to ensure you delete the original AAC file before importing the M4R file.  I found that if I converted an audio file that was already in iTunes from .aac to .m4r and imported the .m4r without deleting the .aac file first, the imported .m4r file wouldn't display in my iTunes 11 'Tones' library folder.

Hope this helps, and thanks to all for your input!
