"Project view" : cannot organize projects any longer (Aperture 3.4.3)

What happens when you select "Year" or "Folder" by clicking the icons?

Is the search field in the upper-right corner of the border of the Projects pane clear?

Have you closed Aperture, rebooted, and re-launched Aperture?

Both buttons are working for me. Your Aperture library does have folders, and contains images from different years, right?

Have you done any trouble shooting? Does it work, if you create a new test library, with a few images added?

• If you can use the buttons when browsing a different library, repair your Aperture library Aperture 3 User Manual: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library
• But if you cannot use the buttons even when browsing a different library, check, if your current user account has problematic setting. Log into another user account and try there. If it works there, delete your user preferences in your main account.

user preferences to delete : you mean the com.apple.aperture.plist files ?

In Mountain Lion the User Library is hidden:

You can reveal it from the Finder's "Go" menu in the main menu bar:

Finder > Go

Then hold down to options-key ⌥, until Library appears in the drop-down menu. Select it and open the Library.

To remove Preferences, open the subfolder "Preferences", to remove the presets, look into the folder

Application Support > Aperture

Also, in Lion and Mt. Lion the process system will not necessarily quit all processes, when you quit an application. It is safer, to log off and on again, before removing files from the user library.

We seem to be talking at crosspurposes - with removing the preferences I meant exactly the files you are asking about below - what did you remove instead? 😝

Couldn't the problem have something to do with :

- the com.apple.Aperture.plist and com.apple.Aperture.plist.lockfile files in the User/Library/Preferences folder ?

And to remove the presets in /Library/Application Support/Aperture, look at the Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics,

- the Database folder files in the Aperture Library package (DataModelVersion.plist file for instance) ?

I do not think, that might help, since repairing and rebuilding the library did not help, and you are having exactly the same problem with other libraries, as you are saying.

- Same problem from another user account

That suggests, that removing preferences and presets in your account will be useless.

How did you test in the different user account? WIth a new Aperture Library and all user settings as the system default setting? If yes, then this looks like a system wide problem.

Have you installed any Aperture plug-ins that might be interfering? Any haxies, contextual menu items?

If not, then I'd suggest to reinstall Aperture - I'd start from the original installation media and and upgrade immediately; how to reinstall on different platforms is described here: Aperture 3.4: May quit unexpectedly on launch after updating

On my wife's MacBook (10.7.5) here's that I've done : install Aperture 3.4.3, update library with iPhoto 9.4.2, access the 9.4.2-updated library in Aperture 3.4.3 —> the problem is here too ! Can't have the Folder- or Year-view of the Projects...

I have both iPhoto and Aperture libraries and it works with both (Aperture 3.4.3, iPhoto 9.4.2).

If the library is the culprit, when upgraded with iPhoto 9.4.2, then you should see the same problem with a new library. How about creating new, simple Aperture and iPhoto libraries on your wifes computer and checking, if new libraries show the same problem on her computer after the upgrade?

U're right, updating of the library might not be the culprit.

It never hurts to repair the library occasionally for maintainance purposes, and to get it out of the way, when debugging. But your problem seems to be system wide.

I still suspect, you may have installed some third party software on both machines, some nice innocent helper application, that is now causing trouble. Do you use any non-Apple add-ons, older programs that have not been tested with Lion or Mt. Lion?

@Kirby, do you have a brainwave, if you are still following this thread? I am quickly running out of ideas.

Do you have a "Console" window open? If not, launch the Console application from the Applications > Utilities folder and have a look, if diagnostics or error messages appear, when you try to group the projects by year or by folder. If yes, then post the message here.

Couldn't the bug be here : when accessing with "Aperture 3.4.3" to "iPhoto 9.4.2"-updated libraries ?

There is a known bug, that sorting of projects by date does not work, if the Aperture library contains smart albums that have been created in iPhoto. If you still have smart albums, that you imported from older iPhoto libraries, then replace them by recreating the same album in Aperture. But I do not see, how this could help here, since you said, that you tested with new libaries on both machines.

Please post back, if you find something in the Console.
