Rather severe ipod problem

Hi, hopefully someone here can help me, as i've been systematically trying every other instruction and suggestion on the support pages of this site, all to no avail.

I have a 20gb click-wheel iPod. Basically whenever I try to upload songs from my library, it just freezes halfway through, and my whole iPod just freezes up too - the "Do Not Disconnect" sign just stays on the screen, not flashing as it usually does but just frozen. Added to this, my iPod makes quite worrying whirring and beeping sounds when this happens. I press the eject iPod button but nothing happens, so I just have to unplug it and reset it for it to work again. I can't upload any songs at all now without the whole thing just freezing up on me. I'm pretty sure i've tried everything this website suggests, including restoring it, and I have all the lastest software updates, but still the problem remains. I can still use my iPod to listen to the songs I have on there fine, but whenever I plug it in and try to upload any new stuff from my library, it just crashes again. If anybody has any bright ideas of what to do, i'd be incredibly grateful for your advice. It's out of warranty now and I can't afford to have it serviced.

Many thanks,

Alex

I had the same problem, and because I kept attempting to connect it the iPod eventually broke and became useless, and I had to use my warranty. My suggestion is: enjoy the songs you have on there as much as you can, because one day your iPod will become like my current one: A stubborn ******* which refuses to service me in any shape or form. Also, try a diff computer....

Put your iPod into Diagnostic Mode : http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/index.shtml

and run the HDD SCAN.

It should take 15 to 30 minutes to complete. Let me know if it passes or fails.

That doesn't fill me with confidence...And the only problem is, I had to restore the thing while trying to fix this problem, so I lost everything on there, and because of this problem, i've only been able to upload a couple of songs without it crashing. I mean, I really like Captain Beefheart but i'm not too keen on the idea of only ever listening to Floppy Boot Stomp on repeat forever... 🙂

Hmmm

Keep trying 😉 make sure you're holding down the buttons firmly.

If you still can't get it to work, I'll post links to articles about getting your iPod recognized by the computer

when the apple logo appears and the hard drive whirring starts, am I meant to release the buttons and then hold back and select? Or do I have to keep holding select and then hold back, if you get what I mean? And should I hold back and select immediately after the apple logo and whirring or should I keep the reset buttons held for a while? This is so annoying, sorry!

Be patient 😉 I may have been wrong in my estimate. The time the test takes to complete is dependent on the size of your hard drive. My estimate is based on my experience with my 15GB 3rd gen iPod.

It shoudn't take more than an hour to complete though.
