"The Disk You Inserted Was Not Readable" Error

Hi, I inserted my External Hardrive into my usb port today and got an error saying "The Disk You Inserted Was Not Readable." I was wondering if someone could walk me through what to do. I went to do "First Aid" but I am not able to click either the "Verify" or "Repair Disk" buttons.

What can I do?

Thanks

External HD = external hard drive.

Formatted = check via Disk Utility how your external hard disk has been formatted. It should be Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

If it is not, and you want to re-format it, note that everything on that hard disk will be deleted. If it is, post back.

When you have tried a new USB cable.

It has to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Do you have room on the startup drive for the stuff that is on there now - always assuming you get to it?

If so, copy the contents (if you are able) to your internal hard drive, format the external, and copy back.

Of course, if you do not yet have any files on your external HD the problem is over! Just format it!
