I can sync my iPhone up with the new iTunes,

if I go on File-Devices the sync icon is greyed out, but when I plug my cable into the laptop it makes that noise (do-do) but it won't even charge it, and when I go on iTunes Wi-Fi sync the 'Sync Now' is greyed out

Perhaps I'm being really thick but can anyone help?
