If it's not responding how the heck am I supossed to download and install the MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.9!? Come on! How do I get it to respond?

That firmware update is to solve an intermittent issue of the computer stalling/freezing during startup, hence giving you the ability to run the update. If your computer is frozen (or fails to start) at all times, then you might be experiencing a different problem.
You could try a PRAM reset before attempting the update again, but in any case, a trip to the Genius Bar looks like the way to go.
