Play count not updating in iTunes 11

I have added the Play Count column to the songs list, but they're all blank, and after playing songs they're still blank. (Last played date is also blank on all songs).

Might have been a conversion glitch, although I got no errors. However still as I play songs nothing is updated.

Any suggestions toe get it working again (or to restore them from before conversion) would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Paul

Count me in for this one too, and I also have multiple smart playlists where the play count is part of the Match criteria.

My setup:

  • iTunes 11.0.0.163 (The scrolling text in About iTunes made it difficult to get that version number!)
  • Windows 8 Enterprise, 64-bit

One other thing, its bothersome to get a link from Google to this thread, then have to logon to post and after logon not being returned to the thread where I wanted to post. 😟

wont help Donald above, but I found this on how to downgrade back to iTunes 10.7

I've just completed it and all is good again - told OSX to forget about reminding me to upgrade to 11

Note: There is a minor error with the instructions, re the .itl file ::

11) Open your iTunes Music Folder.

If you never moved your iTunes folder it’s located here:

Your HD/Your User/Music/iTunes

Or go to the Finder type: Command + Shift + G

Paste this into the the dialog: ~/Music/iTunes

If you moved it to another hard drive, you will know where to locate your iTunes folder.

12) Open the “Previous iTunes Libraries” folder.

13) Find the most recent copy of the “iTunes Library 2012-xx-xx.itl” file.

Normally it will the last file at the bottom of the list.

14) Drag a copy of the file into the iTunes folder.

15) Delete the “iTunes Library” file.

16) Change the name of the “iTunes Library 2012-xx-xx.itl” to ”iTunes Library” with no .itl extension.

For #11: I went to "YourHD"/Users/"Your User"/Music/ITunes

(bits in quotes will be different for your mac)

#15 and #16, the old file was called "iTunes Library.itl" - the instructions make out it wasnt. thus in 16 I renamed "iTunes Library 2012-12-03.itl" to "iTunes Library.itl"

All is good again with my music - including play count updating when using CrossFade 🙂

I have the same problem where a 9 second song will never update play count and last played date. The ones around 15 seconds will do so sometimes. As with those people above it does rather stuff up smart playlists.

A workaround I found was at the ever-useful Doug's Applescripts entitled 'New Last Played Date v3.1' - http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=newlastplayed - which allows a quick manual process.

iTunes 11.0.1 can NOT be relied upon to keep an accurate play count .... come on Apple, get your act together!! I used to use my play count as a way to refresh my playlists. It's a very useful stat for anyone trying to decide if they are getting value for their $, if their listening habits are changing, etc.

I expect this problem to be resolved ASAP.....waiting...tapping foot.....
