Is it possible to use the external display only (with the laptop's screen off so the system thinks there is only one monitor) with a Macbook Air?

I tried it using 2 mice and 2 keyboards. I didn't work for me. If you happen to know this is due to 10.6.8, I would like to upgrade to Mountain Lion to solve this. Thanks.
