reset - hold down the home/power button together until you see the apple logo and then release, then wait for the phone to boot back up.

Should have said that I already tried rebooting the phone. No joy.

I have had this problem before. Try going into the email account that you are trying to clear. Sometimes you may have archived an unread email. Click on all mail and look for any bold email. Then just click on it and mark as read.

I have the same problem but mine says I have 26 unread emails and it happens when I search for an old email and get back out and go to all inboxes? The only way I found to fix it is a complete restore? I ve called Apple and they have no Clue

I just found this but its only a temp Fix because as soon as you search again the phantom notifications will come back
Go to settings/mail/exchange - turn off mail and turn on again
I hope Apple is working on this Issue

This is very annoying... I too have had the problem with an exchange account after searching for old emails on the server... Thanks for the quick tip to get rid of it - empty inboxes are the way forward!
