My icloud account is not syncing contacts with my phone?

I set up a separate icloud account than my husband last night and I am signed in with a separate apple id. I went through www.icloud.com signed in and cleaned up all my contacts but my phone is not showing the changes. I called apple care today and they couldn't answer me please HELP! so frustrated!
