iPhone 5 syncing photos problem

When I connect (wirelessly or by wire) my iPhone 5 to my Mac all photos are removed from the phone. The work round to get photos back on the iPhone is in another thread - delete the 'iPod Cache' in iPhoto library in the Pictures folder in the Home folder then connect the phone and the photos will sync from iPhoto. The next time the phone is connected for syncing and photos will be deleted and I have to use the work round again.

My question is why do I have use the work round each time I sync. Is there a permanent way of stopping deletion of the photos each time I sync the phone?
