Streaming to Apple TV

I know I can stream my iPad and iPhone to my apple tv but what about my iMac or Macbook. If so how?

AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). It also requires the computer to be using wi-fi.

Ok, I have the newest Apple TV and my iMac and Macbook are both Mid 2011 models.

Then you should see an AirPlay icon in the Mac menu bar. If not check system preferences > displays to see if AirPlay mirroring is turned on. If you don't see the option your Mac does not support it.
