I have a relatively new MacBook Air.  When I have software updates, anything system relates updates fine.  However, application software gives me the message "You have updates available for other accounts. To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it."  I have signed in with my apple id to no avail.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

most likley the problematic application was purchased with a different apple ID?

Yes, tzb is right. I have an old (second) appleID and experience the same. Those apps are associated with another appleID account that has been used on your mac. If you know the other account, sign out and sign under that alias/alternate ID, then you will be able to update those apps.
