Java 1.6 on PPC OSX10.5.8: Possible?

I have a PowerMac Quadcore, running OSX 10.5.8. I'd like to run software that requires Java 1.6 or higher. I've been searching for awhile and found many similar questions, but no definitive answer: is this possible?

I see that 1.6 is listed on the machine, and I changed the version link, but it didn't seem to 'take':

Macintosh:versions bobcold$ ls -als

Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_30-161, mixed mode, sharing)

Macintosh:versions bobcold$

Also, Utilities --> Java_Preferences doesn't show 1.6 as being available, only 1.5 and 1.4 (both show a "CPU-Type" as 32-bit, also).

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello, no, not available for PPC Macs or even 32 bit IntelMacs...

This release updates Java SE 6 to version 1.6.0_13, J2SE 5.0 to version 1.5.0_19, and J2SE 1.4.2 to 1.4.2_21.

This release is only for Mac OS X v10.5.7 and later versions of Mac OS X v10.5.

This release of J2SE 5.0 and J2SE 1.4.2 supports all Intel- and PowerPC-based Macs. Java SE 6 is available on 64-bit, Intel-based Macs only.

Possibly wise, but maybe not, but Apple wants to forget PPC Macs existed, & early adopters of IntelMacs would soon be dropped from OS support anyway... so why waste money on those that can't afford to just buy the latest geratest Mac??? 😟 😠
