ipod (5th gen) microphone won't work.. Help?

Everything on the ipod is working fine as far as I know, but the microphone. I may have dropped it one too many times and one day I tried to record a video. It recorded the video, but the audio wasn't there.. There's a static noise instead. I made sure my finger wasn't on the microphone itself, and I made sure the volume was on high. And that's about it. I don't know what's wrong with it. Suggestions and/or explanations would be appreciated.
