ThunderBolt Drive SLOW Reformat

MacBook Air connected to a 8TB ThunderBolt G-Drive... plugged it in, promptly issued a quick wipe of the drive, initial wait time jumped to 2 hours and is now running at 9 hours. I don't have 9 hours to wait for this reformat yet I don't want to cancel the command in order to avoid drive corruption. Any tips?

MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.7.4)
