Install maximum RAM and upgrade to Leopard.
For free you are not going to be able to do anything to your Power Mac. RAM and Leopard DVDs are going to cost you.
That Power Mac is 10 years old so even with the upgrades, it will not give up todate performance in alll catagories.

There is no "best", there is only the one Apple included with it.
Don't be put off by negative remarks about the age of your G4. I am still happy with my older 733 MHz G4 with Leopard. For many things it is quicker than some more recent 'faster' laptops. It has an easy to maintain box with plenty of space for extras.
