Superdrive broken

Hi my internal superdrive has finally given up the ghost after weeks of making noises and refusing to spit out or play cds/dvds. It's booked into the local apple store in a few days but worried about how much it is going to cost to get repaired. Does anyone have any idea of a rough guestimate? it is an iMac 20inch mid 2007 if that helps. Also a friend suggested a cheaper solution may be to buy an external usb drive but on some of the forums it says the apple one isnt compatible with a mac as old as mine?? Anyone know which one would be compatible then if this would save some money on the run up to Christmas ! Many thanks in advance !

Update to the above, i managed to speak to someone at apple who have no idea how much it will cost just it might take up to 5 days to fix. One guy said that i could get an external drive then said it wouldnt be compatible with my mac and put me through to someone else, he said that there is no point getting an external drive as they are only for when there isnt one present and as my mac has one it would constantly default to that one and wouldnt work as the internal one is also faulty? Then he said that the external one only works on certain operating systems but couldnt tell me exactly which ones and said he could only recommend the apple one anyway.

I'm not the most technical person in the world so this is really confusing me. Any suggestions would be much appreciated? thanks

I would highly recommend that you do what I, and others in these Forums, have done and simply buy and connect a common external USB CD/DVD Writer from a good company like LG, which for instance is inexpensive on Amazon.com and other vendors. The external USB Writers work just fine with Macs. I don't know why they told you otherwise. My Superdrive has always worked fine, but for years now I have used the LG in order to save wear and tear on my internal Superdrive.

Hope this helps 🙂
