I just got an iphone5 in japan with softbank. is imessage free as long as i'm texting someone else with imessage (even if they are in the U.S.) using either wifi or 3G/LTE (as long as I have the unlimited data plan)? Or will there still be fees?

There is no charge for using Messages itself. Only any applicable data charges for your Internet conneciton would apply.
