All iCal entries on my iPad have disappeared. Can they be retrieved?

I have not been able to sync with my lap top as it is too old, but was entering data into the iPad 2 calendar. All past months are now totally gone. I guess this is a syncing problem. How can I retrieve that data? How do I stop the data disappearing? Thanks for any advice.
