I cannot move the wi fi on/off switch from off to on. (Its a cloudy grey colour). I have wi fi signal and its been been working fine for weeks. Its just suddenly stopped working.

Which version ipad and which iOS?

You can try this, but I think you may have a hardware problem:

Make Sure iOS is updated to the latest version

Reboot the device by pressing and holding down the home and sleep/wake buttons (power) at the same time until the apple logo appears on the screen, then let go.

If that doesn't work then reset the device by going to settings/general/reset/reset network settings

If those steps do not work you would want to create a backup of your content in iTunes or iCloud and then restore the device AS NEW. If that works, it would be a software issue and you would need to manually add your content back on the device. If that doesn't work, you want to get a replacement by going to an Apple Retail Store or calling 1-800-MYIPHONE.
