Is it ok to give my iPhone 4 serial number to a stranger?

I want to sell my iPhone 4.

But this guy is asking for the serial number.

Can he do anything with the serial number, for example activate the phone to his account. Then claim it for stolen?

Also can he do different things with the serial number?
