How do I sync my contacts from my IMac to my ICloud?

How do I sync my contacts from my iMac to my iCloud? I'm new to Apple products so I will need a computer 101 type explanation. I have some contacts on my iCloud, but the majority are on my iMac. If I can sync the two then I can use it to sync up with my Ipod and Iphone. Whew, that would make life easier! Thanks for any help in advance 🙂

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Winston, you at least got me going in the right direction. I could not find iCloud/Contact "settings" and it was frustrating me. I went under system preferences, (internet & wireless) iCloud. It pulls up a list of icons. The Contacts icon was laready clicked. I was unable to see where to adjust settings. Out of frustration I clicked the check mark and it asked me if I wanted to save my contacts already on my iMac. I said yes. Then I re-checked the box beside contacts. It asked me if I wanted to merge contacts. I clicked "YES". That was exactly what I was attempting to do. Seems like so many little things like this are hard to find and hard to execute. It's done now and I am VERY happy about it! Thanks for getting me to the right place and the assistance!
