Do I need to create my own shared photo stream to share pictures?

Yes, you can only add photos to your own shared album.

I'd rather they leave it as it is, I don't want people adding photos to my shared albums, if they want to share their photos with me, they can create their own shared album.

Yes. but the 'option to' add collaborators would make sense. When working on projects it puts the photos in sequence rather than having to open 2 streams and find they are all over the place.

I agree! We just set up a shared Photo Stream for work so we could all SHARE photos on a project. Now i find out this won't work. Dissapointed!

Can we get the option to assign subscribers as contributors, editors, or reviewers in a forthcoming iOS update?
