I have emptied the trash can and deleted the trash from mail. This seems to have made a difference. I will also look at getting more memory but at this stage there is none available fron the Apple on line Store.
Memory (RAM) costs a lot more from the Apple store.
Google for Crucial or OWC. Lifetime warranties and high quality.
Don't get RAM from Apple - it's horrendously overpriced.
Crucial and OWC (MacSales) are reliable sources of Mac memory and warrant their products for life.
