Q: I have an iBook G4 Laptop and it freezes after 20 minutes of operation.  Underneath gets quite hot?  Does anyone know what the cause may be?

I have an iBook G4 Lalptop and it freezes after 20 minutes of operation.  It also gets quite hot underneath.  Does anyone know of a probable cause for the computer freezing each time I use it?

    Hello,

Could be a defective cooling fan. The problem could be as simple as too many applications running in task manager and not enough memory installed to cope.

    Hello,

What you may wish to do, is get some compressed air. You can buy them cheap enough in small tins.

Use this air to blow any dust from the vents behind the screen hinge. It's a good idea to do so from time to time, any dust will effect performance, if it becomes to clogged with dust.

Make sure you hold the iBook upright, with the vents facing towards the floor while you do this. It will help he loose peace of dust to fall out and not further into the iBook.

    Best of luck

Thanks again Knucklesmac for your good advice.  So that you know, today I have been running my G4 in an elivated position and have had a fan blowing close to the vents behind the screen hinge - Abracadabra!  it worked, and my G4 has been running now for over an hour.  So it appears to be a problem with the fan - However, I will blow out any dust as you suggested and see it that was the porblem.

If the G4 then does not work without the fan blowing close to the vents behind the hinge, I will need to perhaps replace the fan - So would you have any knowledge about the physical procedure for replacing the fan?

    Thanks

    Hello,

    You're very welcome.

There an online guide from a web site called ifixit which can help you with installing a new fan.

I'm not sure which model, here is the link for the 12" G4 model

    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+iBook+G4+12-Inch+800+MHz-1.2+GHz+Fan/159/ 1

They do cover the 14" models also.

Neat step by step guides that show you how to take the unit apart by means of photographs.

    I do hope this helps.

    Best of luck.
