iMac 17'' too slow

I was a PC user for almost my entire life. I've just bought an iMac 17'.
I'm kind of lost, because some friends told me that the Mac would be much faster than the PC, but what's happening is the opposite.
I mainly use my mac for home work, like iphoto, internet, office e etc., nothing much heavy.
But everything I start doing, tooks some time to open, to close, to run, to move. I click to open any program and it takes like 15 seconds to open it.
Is that because of the memory?

Hello JFNETO:

You did not post the memory installed on your system in your profile. Also, is your Mac an Intel-based one?

In any event, 15 seconds is far too long for an application to open.

Take a look at your activity monitor to see if some process is consuming a lot of processor time.

JFNETO, Check if you are running any non-universal app that needs Rosetta. The new iMac 17" is usually fast and opens apps in 1 icon bounce.

Sorry about that, it's Intel-based and it has 512mb RAM.
iPhoto, Excel, Winword, Mail and Photoshop, those are the software that I use a lot.

As I post above, I use most iLife programs and Office, and I have Photoshop installed.

Office is going to use a lot more memory because it requires Rosetta to run and so will Photoshop. As an example, I watched my active memory jump over 200 Megs just starting up MS Word and opening a blank Word document.

But the real question is how many of these programs are you trying to use at the same time with only 512 Megs of memory?

I think that you will be unhappy with the operation of this computer until you have a minimum of 1 Gig. So perhaps save some cash and buy more as soon as you can. Until then, run only a couple of programs at the same time.

Also, make sure that you have repaired permissions after installing any other software on your new Mac.

Masna was referring to JFNETO

His sig says he has a MacBook Pro and an iMac 17" Intel Core Duo just as plain as day. Check his last post, he has updated his sig throughout the day.

Also, his replys as some of us have assisted him in various threads today say he has both new Intel Macs.
