A quandary - pls help

When the I pad (original version) came on the market, I gave my dad one as a gift. It's perfect for his needs - he uses all the default applications to the maximum and and keeps it in pristine condition.

I live in NC and he resides in Ireland and I would love to FaceTime him but I know that it is not possible to retro fit the app on his original iPad. I considered splashing out on the latest model for him but apart from Face Time, there is nothing else in the other versions that he wants or will use.

The iPad is the only Mac product he owns. He doesn't use mobile phones.

What can he use on his I pad that would serve the same purpose as Face Time. The only one I can think of is Skype but can he use it on IPad 1?

Is there anything on the market that he could use to video chat so that I don't have to upgrade to a later I pad.
