What can you do to free memory on the iPhone4 besides trying to delete apps

I've only got a few mb left on my iPhone. Which is orginally 16gb but for some reason says it's 13.7 gb in total. Now I can't seem to update my apps because apparently idont have enough memory. What should I do besides deleting a load of apps and photos Etc?
