http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241MacBook late 2009 only outputs Video via Mini DP port. so you have to feed your audio to the TV separately

Your MacBook should automatically output to the phone socket.
You will need a cable (and adapter)
Phone Jack (on your MB) andwhatever your TV accepts to overwrite the audio from HDMI if it is not being fed.
You should start by checking your TV and if it can overwrite HDMI audio input which is silent in yoru case.
This is usually possible with optical input on your TV or phono Audio in if it has them. -
