itunes not listing songs when cd inserted

(1) You should be able to find your iTunes' version number by launching iTunes

and using its iTunes > About iTunes menu command.

Use ctrl-b to show the menu bar or press alt to make it show on a temporary basis.

Open Edit > Preferences > General tab.

Check that Automatically retrieve track names from Internet is checked.

What, if anything, happens when you insert a CD?

Since this is iTunes 11 it may help to use Ctrl-S to show the sidebar which makes the interface a little more familiar. The CD should then be listed in the left-hand column.

Incorrect TOC (Table of Contents) would suggest the CD is corrupt in some way. Is it supposed to contain a single track? Sometimes commercial audio CDs are published with corrupt header information that is ignored on a standard CD player but makes them unplayable and unrippable on computers.

Will a different CD open properly?

What happens if you try to read the CD with Windows Media Player?

The system shouldn't freeze when there is a problem but this can sometimes happen with corrupt data on a filing system as Windows tries again and again to read the data successfully to the exclusion of other tasks. Does the CD activity light stay on?

Your CD/DVD drive has probably gone down then.

Will the computer boot from a Windows startup disc? If so then the drive itself should be OK and you can check the computer and/or drive manufacture's websites for updates. If not then you need a new drive.
