lack of 'gifting option'

has anyone come across the complete lack of a 'gift option' especially if you already downloaded the app? it is useful to be able to try something out before you gift it to your kid, but then the gift option seems to disappear from your list... IO can't seem to find any threads that related to this specific problem.

Ahh there's the rub- the app was a free one that I tested to see if it would be appropriate for my family, but not one that will be useful for me, so after testing it I wanted to gift it rather than have them buy it themselves... but it does not give me that option unless I own the app. I checked for the dropdown menu on some apps that I Do own and it shows up. Pesky, Guess I have to go about the gift option in a more complicated manner than I had hoped, but thank you for your help. Much appreciated.

Right, but that bypasses giving me the option of buying it for someone else- so thou I understand the overall mentality of what you are saying, I actually was trying to buy it for 2 other people, so they would have made some money, just not the third sale, because I don't need the app- and frankly $4.99 for something I don't need is unnessecary, but I WAS will to cough up the $9.98 for the other 2 people. O well, nothing is perfect- and it is not grounds for too much annoyance. So again Thank you for you time. Have a great day.

I'm confused (though that's not anything particularly new) - is it a free app, a paid-for app, or a free app with the option via in-app purchase to upgrade it ? Apps where you have to pay to originally download them will have the 'gift this app' option (as shown in my screenshot earlier, and that should show whether or not you have bought the app for yourself), free apps and free + in-app purchase upgrade apps won't.

It is a free app with inapp purchase option.

I tested it to see if it would be a worthwhile easy to use organizational app for my 11yr old and my partner. I use another app altogether for my organizing needs. So after testing it I wanted to buy it for them, but not myself. But since I did not buy it there is no option for gifting it. No it is probably not new, just not something I have attempted to do before, so I never came across the problem, and couldn't figure out what the issue was until you asked if it was a free one or $ one. The 11yr old is not interested in using his hard earned gift cards to acquire an app for organization LOL, so I was trying to find an easy solution... which appears to be to buy it with my partners account and gift it to the kid- so THEY will have the app and I won't. Minor issue, kinda simple answer- one of the minor frustrations of the inability to share apps across devices- especially in families. But the kid doesn't need my database app and I don't need his insane collection of games, so no 'family account' dance with iTunes.

Thanks again- hope I cleared up both of our confusions!
