I went through the normal process to update my appleTV.  I got the screen showing to plug the appleTV into the computer, and the white light on the front was flashing quickly.  I found through the discussion forums that I need to hook the ATV to my computer and do a restore through iTunes.  I tried to do that.  I hooked it up to computer and opened iTunes.  I got the screen that showed an ATV picture and said Hit Restore to reset the ATV.  But when I hit the Restore button, it told me it couldn't find the device.  It obviuosly knows it is hooked up to an ATV but then it can't  find the device?  Strange.  Any thoughts?

Are you following the correct instructions regarding the power cord for your particular model of Apple TV.

    1. Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
    2. Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
    3. Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    4. Open iTunes.
    5. Select your Apple TV in the Source list, and then click Restore.

Some users have found that pressing the alt key while using the restore button has helped.

Yes.  This is exactly what I did.  I even tried it a 3rd and 4th time.  Everything worked fine until I tried to update it.
