Can I use a dymo labelwriter 450 with my iPad?

We are implementing a check in system at church and there is a mobile option available to be used with iPads. The company says the labelwriters won't print from an iPad. I find this a little hard to believe with all the advances in technology we have. Can it be done? Is there a special app to get around the system? Or is there a way to connect our labelwriters to the iPad?

iPad 2, iOS 6.0.1

Dear ilovepoodles1

By using a Dymo print server you would be able to get the LabelWriter 450 to function as a wireless printer.

However it does not have native support to be printed from an iPad or any other type of tablet at this time, nor a software to design the labels with on these devices.

It should however be possible to use a third-party app that would allow you to send the print jobs through a Mac or as Ralph suggested, the XPrintServer app should be able to communicate with the printer.

However this is as noted not supported by our printer and we can not guarantee the functionality or quality when printing like this.

The interest in tablet support has been forwarded to those responsible and it is possible that we will see this in the future, however I can not guarantee this at this time.

I hope this clears up any confusion and of course we are here to assist should it be needed.

iPads print using a technology called AirPrint. You can read more about it here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4356

Printers are not connected to an iPad. The printer has to have AirPrint to be able to accept print jobs from the pad.

Saying that there are alternatives. One is to use an app that allows printing from the iPad to a printer connected to a computer.

Another is a specific app developed by the printer manufacturer to allow printing to their printers. Search the App Store for this possibility.

Finally there is a device called XPrintServer. It connects to a network and routes print jobs to networked printers.

You'll have to investigate these unless some one can provide more info specific to the label writers.

Two years later and still no app to print to Dymo Label Makers. Come on Dymo guys, this is a mobile world now. Wake up and smell the coffee! My 450 is connected to an Apple Airport Express, so is available for wireless printing, it just needs a labelling app. If Dymo cannot do it themselves, outsource it to India or China but get the app checked carefully for malware when it is complete. Both iOS and Android apps are really needed. I will try printing a label from either Word or Pages on my big iPad Pro to the 450 but I am dubious if this will work.

hmmn, you might have to get a printing app as Ralph9430 suggested, definitely research your options, and there are options out there. personally i would probably contact a developer that already have a good printing app and explain to them what you require. i use print n share for my ipad to print, so you could always ask them. i know some developers also do bespoke solutions.
