Does iTunes only accept credit cards?

I've noticed that all iTunes ever asks for is credit card information..

What happens when you have a debit card?

I tried purchasing September by Earth, Wind and Fire with my debit card and it did not work.

I don't know anyone, apart from my sister whose in chronic debt because of it, that has a credit card.

Help?
