itunes doesnt recognise ipod 1st gen

My ipod 1st gen has the connect to itunes symbol showing on the screen however when i connect it to the comp itunes does not recognise that anything is attached at all.

i recently changed the battery, but dont know if it worked before then? i changed the battery because it wouldnt switch on or charge, it simply wasnt working.

Any suggestions as to what i could do to fix this problem please?
