GarageBand only allows "offline" automation (entering Control Points with the mouse)

For "online" automation (move the fader or controls and it records the Control Points automatically), you have to use Logic.

Hope that helps

If you end up with a mix that has only one channel then you cn put it back into a Project and pan it to the center so it comes out on both channels. However, that would be a bad band aid solution.

The question is still what happened to the other channel. FIrst of all you would loose that information and the "remixed" signal would be in mono. (left and right channel carrying the same identical signal)
