Q: Aperture crashes Mac on import

Every time I import photos to Aperture the programme locks up my Mac completely and I have to restart.

I have tried repairing permissions, deleting the plist files, repairing the library and rebuilding the library - no difference.

I am using the latest version of Aperture and the Camera is a Canon EOS 550D

I haven't yet tried reinstalling the software.

Can anyone help?

Do you have ant log files in Console from Aperture?

If you do posting them here might allow us to analyze them and get to the bottom of your problem.

    Thanks Alan

I don't see anything that is labelled Aperture - this seems to relate to iTunes, which was open at the time - could it be connected maybe? These are the first few lines of that report - is that what I should post - sorry I'm not familiar with using crash reports.

Post the first 60 lines; but if it says "crashed thread" somewhere, post all up to and including the complete crashed thread.

Every time I import photos to Aperture the programme locks up my Mac completely and I have to restart.

I have tried repairing permissions, deleting the plist files, repairing the library and rebuilding the library - no difference.

That log is a hang report, not a crash log, as I suspected. You keep force quitting Aperture, when it hangs - BTW., you should repair the library each time after force quitting, for that can corrupt the library.

A hang report does not tell much, unfortunately. Do you see something, Allan?

When did this problem start? Directly after you upgraded or installed something? Did you move your Aperture library? When does the hang start? After you select the images to import, or when you try to open the import panel?

Does Aperture hang whenever you import, or only, when you are importing from your camera? Have you tried  different cards or cables? Or importing from the disk?

Have you tried to import into a different Aperure library?

    thanks Leonie

I can't really tie the start of the problem to any upgrade or change in hardware or software.

    Didn't move the library.

I select the images, the import seems to start and then everythibng freezes - there is no way to do anything at all on the Mac it is totally frozen - I have to basically switch it off and on again from the power button I know I shouldn't but - nothing else works.

the problem is only when importing from the camera directly - I could try importing using a card reader I guess, but I thought Aperture would be able to handle the direct import...

To answer your questuin Leonie, no I saw nothing in the report.

If you have been forcing your system down with the power switch then in addition Leonie's suggestion about repairing the Aperture library, I would also strongly recommend that you boot from with Command + R depressed and use Disk Uti;lirty from there to repair your disk drive. There is every likelihood that the disk drive is now corrupt.

Aperture can import directly from the camera; but it wuld be good to know, if the problem is caused by the camera. If you have a card reader, try to use that, or import first to the desktop and try to import from there. YOu could also compare, if ImageCapture can import directly from the camera.

Are you shooting raw or jpeg, btw.?

I have a card reader on my printer which I just tried to import 1 photo from - same result. Had to reboot the mac again ...

Image capture has no problems importing directly from the camera at all.

    shooting jpegs only.

I could try another card reader...

I just successfully imported 2 photos using the other memory card reader. No crash yet.

I do remember now what might have been what I changed when it started happening. I think it coincided with switching on Photostream. It might be in Aperture's attempts to synchronise Photostream that it locks - could that possibly be it?

However - this time the import using the card reader has worked and Photostream has synced and no crash.

Maybe that is what I have to do from now on - small price to pay I think for not having to do the dreaded switch off...

Many thanks for your help both of you - I would be grateful if you had any thoughts on my Photostream idea.

    You are welcome.

I have photo stream turned on without problems. Really no idea.

Importing directly from the camera can be a problem, if the battey is weak; or did you connect the camera to a power suply?
