Finder not showing files when I open folder

A folder on my external hard drive which I was just editing/ doing some file organization with,

contains 60gb of data.

Lots of files and folders in it.

For no apparent reason,

it is now showing nothing in it when I open it,

Still says size is 60gb, but when I open it, the files do not show.

What is going on?

I need to work on these files.

If you can help me with this, it would a huge help.

Thank you.

Okay, it seems like I'm starting to have happy days :

I managed to get "Houdini" to work, and it revealed the original files in their original location.

[many of them had not been moved to the new location].

I then copied and pasted them all to the new location.

They are no longer in the old location.

So that part of the problem is solved.

However, they are only revealed by Houdini.

Without Houdini, the files are hidden in the new location.

It seems somehow finder [or myself] has accidentally designated these files as hidden.

I cannot have Houdini working all the time, obviously, and Houdini reveals system files, which obviously I don't want to accidentally delete, so that is not a solution.

So now the question is :

How do I permanently unhide certain files and folders in finder?

Thanks.

Launch the Terminal app in /Utilities, copy & paste this command into the window that pops up, and hit the return key:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 1

then, do the same with this one:

killall Finder

That will show all hidden files and folders. When you're finished, do this one to hide the ones with invisible flags:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 0

followed by

killall Finder

EDIT :

I gave it a try.

After entering the first couple of commands, it showed the hidden files [good!]

however, they were "greyed out" [implying their hiddenness]

Unfortunately, after the final couple of commands,

All the files and folders went back to being hidden again. ):

Thanks for continuing to help.

That's because they have their flags set to hidden. You could collect them into a single folder and then use the chflags command to make them permanently visible. Just launch the Terminal app, copy and paste this into the window

chflags -R nohidden

add a space, drag the folder with all the hidden things in it into the Terminal window, and hit the return key. That will change the visibility flag to visible.

When you say "add a space" , do you mean add a space to the end of the command you mention?

Will doing this show all hidden things in all the subfolders of the main folder too?

Because I have probably hundreds of subfolders within this folder, and it would be impractical+impossible for me to do this for every one of them.

Thanks.

I will say , until I have checked further, that this appears to have worked !!

I will have to check by comparing with my other drive which contains some of the same files to make sure it is all perfect, but this looks good.

Thank you so much for your amazing help! 🙂😀😁🙂

You are a genius (:
Saved me a lot of stress.

However, I am curious HOW this could have happened in the first place?

It is kind of distressing to think that this can just happen randomly by just moving objects/files/folders place to place!

I could lose some files that are important to me this way over time....

I did not flag anything personally [or knowingly], and it is strange to me how all these files and folders got flagged [and what did they get "flagged" as?]

Thanks again

Don't know.

Agreed. One must remain vigilant and check that their actions result in the correct outcomes.
