Cannot get multitake to work

I think I do everything right. I have a USB-keyboard connected to my iMac, starting Garageband 11, click the loop/cycle-button, set the loop, start recording. But it doesn't record any multiple tracks, but over and over again on the same loop, which is good if that is what you want, but I want multiple takes, but see no such thing. No numbers showing up in the left corner, nothing. So, what am I missing? I am sure it is just a tiny detail but I wish it would be easy to find - and I have searched both here and on the wide internet to see if someone has had a similar problem but obviously not....
