I have "other" space frequently building up.
It is currently over 2 gigs and I have done two restores from iCloud to no avail.
I think I may have to clear and start the iPhone anew.
Does anyone know how to clear this without losing my Angry Birds progress?
And how to prevent it in future?

2 gigs and under is considered normal...
but yeah if you want you can restore as new, then just re-sync your stuff from itunes.

I though anything over half a gig was too much.

Angry Birds progress is lost when the the phone is restarted as new, or at least it did for me.
depends on the phone model you have, the iphone 5 its 2 gigs or less, the 4s and under id say 1.5 but in general, yeah 2 gigs is ok.
LARGE amounts of other usually indicate corrupt data.
icloud should be storing your data so angry birds should not reset.
It does if I restore from iCloud, but before signing up to iCloud I once had to reset the phone as new and all Angry Birds progress data was lost, not the Game Center Achievements.
that was before icloud 😉 now you have icloud and the data should not be lost
