Group shapes with connection lines?

I am creating a diagram of several shapes with connection lines. The shapes are all floating, and I can group them without the connection lines. But with the connection lines, it seems I can't group the shapes (the group option is grayed). Is there any way to keep them together?

You are right.

Not sure how much of a problem this causes however as they are linked by the connection line, even though you could accidentally move one part separately from another.

One way around is to click on all the shapes in the diagram and Copy it, transfer to Preview .app, go command n (new document) it is now a pdf which you can save to the desktop or copy and paste back as an uneditable graphic file.
