Same album titles. Why split into 3 or more albums?

Example: My Cheap Trick music collection is perfectly organized with the correct original album title with each song. In song view it looks very organized. However, when you view in artist or album view it's a mess. I have songs from 16 different Cheap Trick albums. So it stands to reason that I should see 16 albums in my artist of album view. NO! I SEE 31 ALBUMS. The songs are split up. I see tracks 1, 4 & 6 from the album "Heaven Tonight" in one album. Songs 2, 4 & 10 from the same album in a different album (same artwork, same album, but not in the SAME album) And then I see tracks 7&9 in yet a 3rd "Heaven Tonight" album.

I may have downloaded these at different times and used different methods but until they can all be melded together to show only ONE album, my iTunes will be nothing but a big mess!

Steve MacGuire aka turingtest2 - iTunes & iPod Hints & Tips - Grouping Tracks Into Albums - http://www.samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/grouping.asp (older post on Apple Discussions http://discussions.apple.com/thread/2099465?answerId=9910895022#9910895022)

Quick answer: Select all the tracks on the album, File > get info, and either give them all a single "album artist", or check the "compilation" flag (as in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3756735?answerId=17670085022#17670085022).

If these are from multiple-CD sets you may also need to enter the appropriate information in the disc number fields. If they are not a multiple CD set you still need to make sure the disc number fields are set correctly or all empty.

I appreciate you trying to help. I had tried imp68 obviously. I'm meticulous with my iTunes library. No misspellings. All artists, album artists the same. Went to album "Heaven Tonight", selected all. Removed all album art. Did not work.

Set as a compilation. Did not work. There needs to be a way to drop and drag in album view much like you can in iPhoto. I'm at a loss as how to fix it. User uploaded file

Like Imp68 says, there is a mis-match in the metadata in the songs that come from the same album so that iTunes "sees" them as being two different albums. The most usual fault causing this, is that the "Disc Number" field is filled in for some of the tracks and not for others. Do as Imp68 says and do Get Info on each and every track and check the tags again.

Just to be clear, have you tried what I originally had said? Hold cmd and click on each track that should be part of the same album. Then right click on 1 of them while they're highlighted and do get info. That will allow you to edit certain fields all at once so there's no room for error. Blank out everything in the get info window. Only enter data for the album and the artist. No other information is needed to make them group. See if that works. If it does, then try re-adding information to individual tracks (like track # etc).

Yet another 'can you try ____ post'…

e.g. more random thoughts 🙂

Open them in another tagging app like …

Musicbrainz Picard

Tagalicious

Song Genie

See if they can lookup & repair them, or look for odd feilds. Other apps like SongBird have tag editors that could let you see more or less info too.

Check your user owns and has write permission on the actual files in the Finder (Get info will tell you).

Take a look in the video tab to see if there are any fields filled in there, nuke them via the select all & get info trick.

Can you drag n drop the album files to /Users/Shared/afolder & create a new test user & import to the new iTunes to see if they are broken in there? It may be some obscure preference that is breaking this just for you.

If it works move them back to you account & see if they fall apart again, you may need to fix permissions after each move.
