A 3rd gen iPod nano isn't showing up in my iTunes. Help?

My auntie received a 3rd gen iPod nano as a gift a few years back, she hasn't opened it yet. My computer is a Macbook Pro and my version of iTunes is up to date. Is my iTunes TOO up to date for her iPod to show up? It doesn't even show up in my devices. What can I do?

there is a lot of this going around with itunes 11 and i'm assuming that is what you have. there are also several threads about how to downgrade to itunes 10.7. as far as i know apple hasn't addressed this yet so we don't know if they're planning to fix this bug in a future update.
