9.4.2 won't multiple drag and drop

Trying to get to sharing photostreams

Have OSX Lion 10.7.5 and iPhoto '11

Didn't see any way to share my photostreams, so I thought I would upgrade to Mountain Lion

Noticed the iPhoto 9.4.2 update and installed it. Wiating (and waiting) for Mountain Lion to download from the app store (another story for another time)

Since updating iPhoto with the 9.4.2. update, I can no longer select multiple photos and drag them into PhotoShop. I do this all of the tme to batch manipulate the photos before uploading to Facebook. When I grab the photos, all looks okay (I see the number of photos I am copying in the little red circle), but when I drop them in to Photoshop only a few of them copy over? I tried repairing the iPhoto library by that didn't fix my problem.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

That's not how you work with Photoshop.

You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

Thanks Terence, but I have a need to work with many files at once, and I really don't wish to modify my originals.

Here is the scenario - come back from a sporting event. Have about 100 photos I want to post to FB to share with the athletes. I import into iPhoto. CMD-click on the photos I want to share. Drag them over the photoshop icon. They all load into PhotoShop. I then use Automate->Batch to apply some preset actions to all photos (level adjust, sharpen, shrink for only use). The script saves the modified files off in a folder outside of iPhoto, then upload all the pics to FB. Up until yesterday when I upgraded to iPhoto 9.4.2, this has worked flawlessly.

At no time does iPhoto modify or allow an external editor to modify the original. It treats the original like a film shooter treats the negative. That's what that whole 'revert to original command is about in the Photos menu.

Dragging multiple files works just fine here. Try repair permissions with Disk Utility

I ran all of the repair tools in the Ctrl/Cmd menu. Still have the same problem. I don't have a Repair Disk Permissons option for this volume in Disk Utilities. It says "not available bc the selected disk is set to ignore ownership." My iPhoto library is on an 2TB external WD drive.

Should I reinstall iPhoto? Roll back the update and reinstall?

What format is that disk External?

You need to run the permissions repair on the Start-Up disk. If that is the source if the issue it's an OS one not an iPhoto one.

Is that drive formatted OS X Extended (journaled) with ownership set to be ignored?

If not it should be.

Redundant RAID I believe.

Okay. I will run the permissions repair on the startup volume. I might have an issue with the configuration of the external drive. I have never been able to get time machine to back it up.

The drive is formatted as it should be. Try this: launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists.

Also, in the meantime, I deinstalled and reinstalled the iPhoto app. No change. Still can drag and drop multiple files.

Well if the new library works correctly then the fault must be in the old one.

Option 1

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.

If that fails:

Option 2

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)

This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Well Terence, you solved my problem!! Option 1 above did not do the trick (I tried all available options on the options menu), but downloading iPhoto Library Manager and rebuilding the library did the trick.

I don't know if the rest of you noticed but if you instead do a copy/paste operation from iPhoto into Finder, it seems to work fine for me every time. The drag and drop option does not however. Booo.
